First of All, what is Federal Bureau of Investigation ?i
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States, which simultaneously serves as the nation's prime federal law enforcement agency. Operating under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI is concurrently a member of the U.S. Intelligence Community and reports to both the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence. A leading U.S. counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and criminal investigative organization, the FBI has jurisdiction over violations of more than 200 categories of federal crimes.
Although many of the FBI's functions are unique, its activities in support of national security are comparable to those of the British MI5 and the Russian FSB. Unlike the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which has no law enforcement authority and is focused on intelligence collection overseas, the FBI is primarily a domestic agency, maintaining 56 field offices in major cities throughout the United States, and more than 400 resident agencies in lesser cities and areas across the nation. At an FBI field office, a senior-level FBI officer concurrently serves as the representative of the Director of National Intelligence.
FBI Rank Structure
Director
Along with the Deputy Director, the Director ensures cases and operations are handled correctly. The Director also is in charge of staffing the leadership in any one of the FBI field offices with qualified agents. The Director briefed the president on any issues that arose from within the FBI until the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 was enacted in response to the September 11 attacks. Since then, the Director reports to the Director of National Intelligence, who in turn reports to the President. The Director is also supervised by the Attorney General, as the FBI is an agency of the Department of Justice.
Deputy Director
The Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (formerly known as the Associate Director) is a senior United States government position in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The office is second in command to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and takes over responsibilities as Director should his/her office be absent or vacant.
Supervisory Special Agent
A supervisory special agent is a specific job within the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). It gives them with the responsibility of leading teams of special agents in investigations. It requires them to report directly to managing and executive special agents.
Special Agent
Interviewing a subject for an ongoing investigation in the morning, testifying in court before lunch, planning an operation with intelligence analysts and partners in the afternoon and speaking at a community event in the evening. That’s just one day in the life of a Special Agent.
As a Special Agent, every day is different. In fact, every career path is different. In an organization made up of careers like no other, being a Special Agent can be a lifelong career of uncommon days and amazing experiences.
Senior Agent
Federal Bureau of Investigation Senior Agent one of the most important missions of the FBI Academy: minting secondary agents. Each special agent must have the knowledge, skills, commitment, and fortitude to investigate terrorists, spies, and a raft of dangerous criminals—all while wielding their law enforcement powers with compassion for those they encounter and respect for the U.S. Constitution and the laws they enforce.
Agent
For the agents in training, just getting in the door hasn’t been easy. They’ve competed against hundreds of thousands of like-minded Americans in one of the most rigorous and selective application processes in the nation. In some cases, they’ve given up high-paying jobs in the private sector for the opportunity to serve their country. Now, the recruits must spend countless hours studying everything from ethics to investigative techniques, learning about Bureau operations, gaining experience in conducting intelligence-led investigations, fine-tuning their computer skills, and pushing their bodies to their physical limits.
Intern
The FBI offers internships and entry-level positions in a wide range of disciplines to students of all backgrounds. Our unique opportunities offer students from all walks of life a head start on a career like no other.
